Since when is "athlete" a three-syllable word? It's your language. You use it every day. You should strive to master it. My late mother, a 27-year, graduate-level professor of English, embedded that in my brain once upon a time. I’m not nearly as smart as she was, but I’m sharp enough to recognize that the vast majority of native-born Americans can’t speak or write English worth a lick.

WELL, IT WAS SORT OF A GOAL
Yesterday morning a local television reporter was doing one of those cutesy (but lame) Halloween pieces that, for some reason, broadcast companies think we really want to watch.
Instead of saying ghoulish (as in goo-lish), she pronounced it goalish.
Make it stop!!!

BON JOUR
I can't expect the average person to know how to pronounce “Beignet,” but I do expect a broadcaster on a national morning news show to know how to pronounce it.
It is not pronounced ben-yet.
It is pronounced ben-yay.
This is a beignet. And they are freakin’ delicious. Especially at the Café Du Monde in New Orleans.
